"Do Beliefs Matter: the Impact of Beliefs on Health Behavior"

Dr. Graff will provide a brief overview of medical anthropology and it’s understandings of how beliefs shape behavior.  Examples from anthropological research will provide insights into when, and in what ways, health beliefs do and do not shape health behaviors and suggestions on how these findings might be applied to clinical practice.

Dr. Robert Graff has a PhD in medical anthropology and is currently a member of the adjunct faculty at Boise State University in the Department of Anthropology.  His past research included studies of injection drug users and HIV prevention.  Since 2007, Dr. Graff has also worked as the Chronic Disease Epidemiologist in the Bureau of Community and Environmental Health at the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.  His professional interests include chronic disease/maternal child health/oral health epidemiology and surveillance, health disparities, evolutionary medicine, and the use of GIS.  In his spare time, Robert diligently works to expand his skillset in rock climbing and whitewater kayaking.
